Nylon strings have a softer touch and a softer sound.
Usually nylon strings are used on classical played guiters.
Steel strings have a hard touch and a stronger sound.
    Usually used on non-classical guitars.

Nylons (for classical) are usually “fingered” or “plucked” while steel (for popular) is usually “strummed”.

Nylon strings have a softer sound and are easier to hold the chords down. They give a sound that is a folk music kind of sound, or a ballad sound. They are used on classical guitars. Steel strings are more durable, give a harder callous on the chord fingers and a harder sound with a bit more ‘twang’ to them. Steel strings can go with a more up-tempo country-western sound or a soft rock sound on an acoustic guitar.
For electric guitars the steel strings are used.
